The Pros and Cons of Wearing Dentures
When you start wearing dentures, you will feel uncomfortable and uneasy, knowing that there is a strange thing inside your mouth. Strangeness may be also felt when you are speaking, biting and chewing. However, this is all normal and a part of the process of getting used to it even when you are wearing the best dentures there is.
Other people may immediately stop wearing the dentures due to this discomfortability. Nonetheless, this is not advisable. Definitely, with patience, a patient will get used to using dentures in no time with proper guidance from the dentist. If you are in New Jersey, you do not have to ask for this since the dentists themselves initiate the information about this. For instance, you may have to consult the dentist in NJ time and again to check the fit of the dentures as this may change in a few months’ time.
One con of wearing dentures that the patients complain about is the excessive salivation. Such an experience is awkward, unpleasant and embarrassing especially when you are speaking. Salivation would be more obvious when wearing dentures. It would be harder to explain to the one you are speaking to of the cause of you salivation. People do not necessarily want other people to know that they are wearing partial dentures.
Other than this, wearing dentures may irritate the gums, leading to soreness. As an eventful plight as it is, you have to care not just of the permanent dentures but also of the overall health of the mouth including the gums, throat, lips, teeth etc.
Another con of wearing dentures is that the food may taste different. Because natural dentures cover either the the floor or roof of the mouth, this will have an impact on the taste of food the denture wearers eat. Not only will you not enjoy the food, but you may not also enjoy the whole eating experience especially during dine-outs. Eventually, you may refrain from attending social gatherings like luncheons and family dinners, affecting your social life in the process.
While there may be some problems to wearing a denture, the pro would be the replacement of the missing tooth. Edentulous affects the individual emotionally more than physically. Because of the embarrassment and lower self-esteem that the condition brings, you tend to withdraw from different social activities. You also tend to speak and smile less. But with dentures, you can get back to your old life, to your old friends and to your old smile.
To top it all, getting dentures is not always bad then. Instead, you should focus on why getting dentures is a positive thing for you. An advice is that you should go get natural looking dentures so that they would not notice that you are actually wearing one.
